My Lola is a big dog. I mean, she’s not a Great Dane, but she’s a large and imposing 70 lbs of muscle and fur. She’s also got some minor medical issues. Which means that she’s an expensive dog. We easily spend $300 per month on food and medications and supplements for our giant love bug, and there’s not much I can do to decrease that expenditure. The one area where I can really make a budgetary difference is in the ways I spoil her. Because, let’s be honest, there’s no way I’m going to NOT spoil my smush-face, cuddle monster.
To properly spoil my girl, she requires a large rotation of stuffed toys (which I’m constantly stitching up, cleaning and replacing) and several sizable, cushy beds. This is where my secret weapon comes into play: TJ Maxx and Homegoods. Look, I’m not saying this because I want you to spend your money there, I have no affiliation with these stores, nor do I get any financial reimbursement for this. I just genuinely want everyone to get their dog everything they need and I don’t see why we should spend a fortune doing it. Seriously, the prices at TJ Maxx and Homegoods are awesome. Yesterday, I bought Lola two giant beds and nine toys for $85. That’s it!!! A comparable haul would have cost me at least twice as much at Petco or Petsmart.
Also, it’s totally worth it! Last night, when I swapped out Lola’s old deflated bed for one of her new overstuffed, fleece lined beds she went nuts! In a good way. She got all excited and started hopping around a bit (don’t tell the vet, she’s supposed to be resting her leg) and then she lay down and went straight to sleep. Deep sleep. Other than a couple potty breaks and breakfast, she hasn’t moved from her new bed or, really, stopped snoring in the last 18 hours. Worth every penny to make her so comfortable and content.
